The dismal streets of Harlem were devoid of most life. A rat scampered here and there, skittering around the debris and trash of the back alleys as it tried to avoid the cascading rain. The street lights could barely pierce the rain and darkness that surrounded the Big Apple’s northeastern suburb, adjacent Central Park, as the storm raged on, making the random flares of lightning the only real light; a kind of light which gave the city streets a horror-movie appeal, showing only moments in time before all of it fell into darkness again.
This is where she found herself, as her eyes slid open and her head felt like a concussion caused by Thor himself. Her long lashes flicked back, sending droplets of the cold, murky rain away from her eyes. Her ghostly, silver-gray eyes turned to slits as she took in the area around her; large metal bins filled with vial smelling contents, a firm ground made of asphalt and dirt. The walls of this area were of old, weather-worn brick that she could just make out through the downpour and wetted surface. It was also much warmer here, she noticed, with strange and new, tantalizing scents. She drew in several deep breaths and let the aromas glide across her palette much like a cat would, when suddenly a sound caught her attention, making her head snap around and lower; her body coiling like a spring to further hide her presence. Three people walked by her small alley and she tilted her head as her silvery eyes followed them... Humans...
Andi looked down at her body and noticed something very strange... She
was human... ‘How the hell did I get on Earth?... How long have I been here?...’ She looked down and noticed she had her normal pants, tank-top, and jacket on. She finally sat back and tried to focus. How had she gotten there?, from how long ago?, and why couldn't she remember? Her thoughts raced through her mind, causing her to become dizzy and light headed. That was when a memory flashed across her mind; a simple image of nothing more than a small face with large green eyes.
"Jaydrin..." she whispered and felt odd, feeling the way her human lips moved across flat teeth and a rounded tongue. She brushed her tongue across her new teeth twice before finally deciding it was time to get out of the rain. She had no problem with rain, though; hell, she enjoyed
it on most days, but this was starting to become ridiculous. She stood in one fluid movement and pulled the dual hoods up over her head; rather pointless really, she thought, with how wet her coat and hair already were… but it was for a comfort that came in hiding her face and head from view that she did so anyway.
She made her way around the corner leading into the alley and took a moment to look around. The three she'd spotted were now a good ways down the street and hustling to get out of the rain, too. She tilted her head at them, then turned to look at the streetlight and a mail box that looked like it had been beaten by a berated juvenile. Her eyes finally scanned across a warm light coming from behind the windows of a large door. Her head slowly tilted as she contemplated what was going on behind those large doors, curiosity pushed her pupils to expand just at the rims of her irises.
She made her way toward the building and peeked in through one of the windows after smearing away some of the rain. When the light struck her face, it showed soft mocha-latte-colored skin that seemed to be a fine blend of the Oriental and Greek complexions; her nose almost pixie-like with the end slightly turned upwards. Her eyes rounded with a soft slant to them, her lips were luscious with a petal-soft appeal, and her hair was starting to curl in tight ringlets from the rain, and reflected a dark auburn; almost black.
Her cat-like eyes lit up with excitement as she realized what she was looking at; books upon books stared back at her while a few people wandered the maze of knowledge. She had stumbled across a library; one of her favorite things from this world. She straightened and pulled on the handle of the door, and peeked in, making sure no one was watching. It was then that she snuck quickly through the opened door and tip-toed across the carpeted floor barefoot, as she'd been since she'd woken here.
Once she was behind a shelf of books, she paused to look around, glancing over titles and along spines as her mouth slowly opened in awe. She wandered about the feeling; one as if she was floating in an aura of awe. After only a short time, her fingers had run across hundreds of journals, newspapers, and magazines from the current date. She blinked as she realized
the date. "October 20th, 2013... But ... wait...That can't be right,"
she started to say when the nearest binding of their pages slipped from her hands to cause a loud crack from the wooden spool ends slapping the floor.
